Interfacing Online Bibliographic Databases with Z39.50
نویسندگان
چکیده
Many online databases are available on the Internet, each one with its own access procedures and a special user interface and query language. The Z39.50 protocol standard offers a solution to this situation of diversity and lacking interoperability. However, the majority of online databases does not yet support Z39.50. In this paper, we describe a system that interfaces online bibliographic databases with Z39.50 clients, if the databases are accessible via TELNET and have a line-oriented interface. Our system thus acts as a gateway or middleware. One part of it is a Z39.50 server, which can be accessed by every Z39.50 client. The client’s requests are translated into commands of the database’s query language, which are then sent to the database via TELNET. The results received from the database are analyzed, transformed into the appropriate Z39.50 protocol data units and sent back to the Z39.50 client. The system is highly configurable and can be adapted to the different features and parameters of online bibliographic databases.

Z39.50 and Personal Bibliographic Software
Many thousands of researchers are now using personal bibliographic managers such as Reference Manager, EndNote and ProCite to access bibliographic databases via the Z39.50 protocol. Using the EndNote software as an example, this paper demonstrates how researchers are using a standard search interface to access diverse databases and download references into their personal databases. There follow...

Over the past several years, a number of wide-area information navigation and discovery tools have been introduced, including WAISS1], Gopherr2], WorldWide Webb3], etc. In this paper, we describe a graphical query interface to remote bibliographic databases that can be found on the internet. A library query client, called LibSearch, has been designed and implemented using a set of APIs based on...
متن کاملSearch end Retrieval Using Non-Proprietary Standards-Based Communications Protocol Z39.50
This paper aims to present a Z39.50 protocol for distributed searching in library applications. It specifies Z39.50 client and Z39.50 server behavior for search and retrieval across online library catalogues. In order to make all databases accessible from a single interface, they are all connected to the Internet through Z39.50. The paper examines the potential of Z39.50 to enable new methods o...

BACKGROUND Web-based searching is the accepted contemporary mode of retrieving relevant literature, and retrieving as many full text articles as possible is a typical prerequisite for research success. In most cases only a proportion of references will be directly accessible as digital reprints through displayed links. A large number of references, however, have to be verified in library catalo...
متن کاملJoined up writing: an Internet portal for research into the Historic Environment
Resource discovery has been a major concern of the Archaeology Data Service (ADS) since its inception in 1996. The ADS was heavily involved in the promotion and adoption of the Dublin Core (DC) metadata standard for categorising resources and how this can facilitate interoperability between distinct resources. An early example of this was the Z39.50 enabled Gateway which enables the cross searc...
